Our Vision & Purpose

YHA runs a network of over 150 Youth Hostels. From castles and Grade I listed buildings to camping pods and arctic cabins, our accommodation is set in picturesque coastal towns, city centres and stunning countryside locations throughout England and Wales.


We’re continually reinvesting, revitalising and creating exciting new accommodation to provide our customers with the unique opportunity to discover, explore and experience something new.

We’re here to give every young person the chance to experience amazing places, share extraordinary journeys and discover the skills and confidence that will take them places.

Every bed, in every hostel, on every night of the year can make a positive difference to somebody – be they holiday-maker, short-breaker, business traveller or backpacker. But that’s just for starters. As a youth charity, we intensively support travel opportunities for young people – especially those for whom adventures are otherwise out of reach. And our particular focus is on improving physical and mental health and wellbeing through these experiences – and passing on crucial life skills that improve young people’s life chances.

Everyone who stays at one of our hostels, cabins or campsites contributes to our work as a youth charity. That’s because the income we generate is reinvested back into our network and programmes, enabling us to achieve greater reach and impact on young people with challenging lives.

Everything we do is in the spirit and service of our Charitable Object:

To help all, especially young people of limited means, to a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside, and appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities, particularly by providing Youth Hostels or other accommodation for them in their travels, and thus to promote their health, recreation and education.

Our vision

To reach out and enhance the lives of all young people, with the goal of reaching more than one million young people every year by 2020. To achieve our vision, we have developed four strategic themes for 2017-2020:
